Rewriting the code for better performance proved to be a difficult task, one that Simmons told us took nearly six months-much longer than expected. "The UI needed to get more interesting and better-that was a big part of it-but even more important was the issue of performance." "Once NetNewsWire for iPhone 1.0 came out, and after several updates, it became clear to me that it needed a total rewrite," said Simmons.

To understand what's taking so long to get NNW 3.2 ready, though, we have to look at the development of NetNewsWire for iPhone. "Brad did a great job on it," Simmons told Ars, "I'm totally pleased." NNW 3.2 will also be ad-supported, including ads from Coudal Partners' The Deck, though Simmons said that a paid, ad-free version is being planned. NNW 3.2 upgrades some of the internal storage format to a more optimized version, and the transition to that storage format will be complete in NNW 4.0, further down the road. "A lot of people also need a browser-based reader." With NewsGator dropping its web-based services, Google Reader remains one of the few viable options to satisfy all those requirements.īesides Google Reader support, though, the new version has a couple of other changes.

"It only works with Macs, but a lot of people who need syncing need it work with Windows or their iPhone," he said. Macworld's Rob Griffiths isn't thrilled with the loss of MobileMe syncing, either, but Simmons told us that MobileMe support had issues. Other users have reported that Google Reader is blocked where they work-we won't comment on whether those users should be reading RSS feeds at work or not, but it will present a problem for them.

Comments left on the NewsGator blog suggest that some customers preferred NewsGator's online version to Google Reader. Mac/MobileMe, and FTP syncing support is being dropped from the final version, expected to be released as soon as the Google Reader bugs-like Reader's lack of support for nested folders-are resolved.ĭespite Google Reader support being a common request, though, not everyone is thrilled with the decision to standardize on Google Reader for syncing.

For those who want to get a taste of Google Reader support, you can download 3.2b6 now, but Simmons warns that it is "a beta-it has bugs and incomplete features." NewsGator. Simmons says that NNW 3.2 will be a transition release for Google Reader support going forward. "We've been working with the Google team to make these changes as smooth as possible, and they are thrilled to welcome all NewsGator users to the Reader family." Advertisement "The bottom line for you: we keep improving our client applications, and now you can sync with and use the web based RSS reader you've been asking for," wrote Laura Farrelly, VP of Marketing, in the NewsGator Daily Blog. NewsGator's enterprise customers will be unaffected by the change. The company is recommending its users transition to Google Reader, "the world’s most popular web-based RSS application," according to NewsGator. That basic plan hasn't changed, but NewsGator has decided to discontinue its web-based services for consumers altogether. Instead, NewsGator intended to make money on its enterprise and server software, and its clients would fuel ubiquity of RSS use. The company eventually made its online reader, which originally had paid subscriptions, as well as its NetNewsWire and FeedDemon desktop clients, available for no charge.

The software was developed by Simmons for his independent Ranchero Software in 2002, but was later acquired by NewsGator, then a popular online feed reader.

NetNewsWire is arguably the most popular RSS reader on Mac OS X, and is a favorite here in Orbiting HQ. However, the release was also accompanied by an announcement from NewsGator that the company would discontinue its online feed reading and syncing service, instead opting to transition all of its clients-including the popular Feed Demon for Windows-to Google Reader for syncing.

NetNewsWire developer Brent Simmons has released the sixth beta of version 3.2, finally adding the Google Reader integration that users have been requesting for some time.
